Personal Survival Techniques (PST)

The course “Personal survival techniques» corresponds to STCW Code Section A-VI/1 requirements and is based on IMO model courses:

  • IMO Model Course 1.19 – Personal Survival
  • IMO Model Course 1.20 – Basic Fire-Fighting
  • IMO Model Course 1.13 – Medical Emergency – Basic Training
  • IMO Model Course 1.21 – Human relationships

According to STCW Code Section a-VI/1 any person employed on board sea-going vessel before assigned to shipboard duties is to complete approved familiarization training in personal survival techniques. A trainee successfully completing this course will be able to react in a correct manner during emergency situations, take measures appropriate to his own survival and to the survival of others, and use survival equipment correctly. He will also acquire knowledge which in some instances will enable him to identify and correct defects and thereby prevent emergencies. Training includes lecture studies with demonstration of equipment and video material according to themes and practical studies in training centre with swimming pool, firefighting room and medical class. Equipment and material allows students to demonstrate their competence in all questions of course program. A trainee successfully completing this training is able to:

  • Survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment
  • Minimize the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situation involving fire
  • Fight and extinguish fires
  • Take immediate action upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency
  • Comply with emergency procedures
  • Take precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment
  • Observe safe working practices
  • Understand orders and be understood in relation to shipboard duties
  • Contribute to effective human relationships on board ship
