Dynamic Positioning Advanced Operator Course (DPA)

Brief Course Description
This course is the third phase of the Nautical Institute (NI) DP Operator Certification Scheme. The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has included the NI train-ing scheme in their document “The training and experience of key DP personnel”, which has been referenced by IMO as an industry standard. The Dynamic Positioning Advanced Operator Course provides the participant with the opportunity to plan and conduct DP operations using a shore based system. This system is interfaced with a simulator and is able to provide participants with realistic simulations of DP scenarios, including error and failure mode simulation. This type of course provides realistic training in a safe en-vironment, without incurring the risks that would accompany any such training conducted using the real-ship environment.

Objective
Give the participant further insight, experience and confidence in performing offshore operations under DP control. By the end of the course the participant should have acquired a thorough knowledge of the practical aspects of DP operations. The participant should be capable of planning and conducting any DP operation, including risk assessment, contin-gency planning and assessment of vessel capability. The participant should be able to undertake the operation with due regard to all circumstances of seamanship and operational requirements. The participant should also be able to react correctly to any circumstances which could lead to catastrophic failure or which would constitute a catastrophic failure itself.

Target audience
DP operator trainees.

Entry requirements
DP Basic Operator Course (DP Induction Course) and normally minimum 30 days documented seagoing familiarization on a DP capable vessel.

Training facilities and equipment

The navigational simulator Navi-Trainer Professional 4000 (NTPro 4000). Navis IVCS – Dynamic Positioning System. Training course “Dynamic positioning systems maintenance” starts every week. Registration on this course is conducted in room 114.
