Dynamic Positioning Induction Operator Course (DPI)

Brief Course Description
The Dynamic Positioning Induction Operator Course is the first phase of the Nautical Institute (NI) DP Operator Certification Scheme.The International Marine Contractors Asso-ciation (IMCA) has included the NI training scheme in their document “The training and experience of key DP personnel”, which has been referenced by IMO as an industry stan-dard. To obtain the NI DP operator certificate the course participant must after this course have 30 days seagoing DP familiarisation from a DP capable vessel, attend the advanced DP operator course, and have 6 months supervised DP watch keeping experience from a DP class 2 or 3 vessel. If the 6 months watchkeeping experience is acquired on a DP Class 1 vessel, it is possible to obtain a Limited DP certificate. This certificate is only valid for a DP Class 1 vessel. The course participant will be issued with the NI Dynamic Positioning Operator’s Log Book at the end of the Basic Operator Course.

Objective
Give the participant knowledge of dynamic positioning (DP), practical use of DP and DP system limitations. The participant will learn to set up and operate the DP system and to recognise alarms and warnings. The participant will get general knowledge of the use and limitations of position reference systems and other sensors and systems interfaced to the DP. The participant will also be introduced to different types of DP operations, operational procedures and rules and regulations for offshore operations under DP control.

Target audience
Navigators, DP operators and other users of DP systems.

Entry requirements
General knowledge of vessel manoeuvring.

Training facilities and equipment
The navigational simulator Navi-Trainer Professional 4000 (NTPro 4000). Navis IVCS – Dynamic Positioning System. Training course “Dynamic positioning systems maintenance” starts every week. Registration on this course is conducted in room 114.
